Prom Night: A Night to Remember or a Night to Forget

My niece Margo found the perfect prom dress! She and her boyfriend  AJ were fabulous! They discussed colors ahead of time and decided a Red/White theme would be the right combination. Check them out. So cute.

Image

Margo and AJ planned for months. She shopped for the perfect dress.  It was a magical night. But for some girls Prom night has been a night to forget instead of a night to remember. I have to be honest  Style Stars,  it has been a while since I had to think about prom dressing, but I’ve noticed this past season prom dressing has been full of controversy and making headlines.

Have you heard about the teen from Washington state.  Brittany Minder was banned from her prom. Why?

Image

Well Brittany is well endowed and school officials felt her dress was too low cut revealing too much clevage. Not just Washington, two teens in Cleveland Ohio were also not let inside the party hall- same reason too much boobage. (By the way, Brittany eventually put on a wrap and stayed covered up on her big night).  And in New Jersey there was a ban on strapless dresses at a school dance. School officials cited the fear of wardrobe malfunctions as the reason.  A couple of parents even sued, but a judge sided with the school district: Dresses must have at least one strap.  A ruling that upset parents  especially those who already purchased strapless dresses for their daughters. Prom dresses are not cheap.  Some Style Stars spend hundreds of dollars on a prom dress.  Of course I would find a bargain! But Style Stars need to worry about more than money when it comes to prom fashion.

Rachel Johnson...NBA stylist

Rachel Johnson…NBA stylist

Hey style stars, well it’s hot out, but that doesn’t mean that you should not check out your neighborhood garage sales. I happen to love the hunt and the excitement of finding that one thing that’s different from anything you may have seen. A nice statement piece or designer dress that may have been worn or not. Well, I lucked out this past weekend.

A friend invited me to what I considered to be the ultimate garage sale. Right in my area just one town over, stylist to many of the NBA elite players, Rachel Johnson, gave a garage sale that would rival any high end boutique or consignment shop in NYC. The tall beauty has worked with some of the best players in the league like Lebron James, Amar’e Stoudemire and many others. With a passion for men’s tailoring and over thirteen years experience in styling, Rachel has put together winning red carpet looks for many of the NBA’s star players.

But, I was not looking for men’s clothes. Sorry fellas! This rare sale featured women’s runway looks from Rachel’s own collection and other stylists who have their pulse on what’s hot. I was able to snag a pair of vintage earrings that will look incredible with any little black dress. Price: $5.00. I also got a summer fitted dress for …wait for it, $15.00. The tag was still attached. Oh, there were several Louboutins. Darn. not my size. Lucky ladies.

So, style stars, take advantage of your neighborhood garage sales. Be patient with the hunt, wear comfortable shoes, and yes haggle those prices. Don’t be shy about it. You just may leave the sale with a great stylist piece or someone’s grandmother’s heirloom. Happy hunting.

It is steamy hot- so what is a brother to do?

Hey Style Stars! – While we girls are rocking our summer dresses, skirts, tanks, and colored jeans- it is always a blast to see a brother not letting the heat burn his fashion sense. So ok, my style sister and I were hanging in Harlem the other night at African food restaurant  Ambassadors,  when our friend Eugene Tuff rolled in.Image

It was a steamy night but Eugene looked way cool. And Style Stars take a closer look at the material of his light weight stunner.

Image

Yes that is seersucker. Remember that material? It is so retro.  (Here is a brief history courtesy of Wikipedia:

Seersucker is a thin, puckered, all-cotton fabric, commonly striped or chequered, used to make clothing for spring and summer wear. Seersucker is woven in such a way that some threads bunch together, giving the fabric a wrinkled appearance in places. This feature causes the fabric to be mostly held away from the skin when worn, facilitating heat dissipation and air circulation. It also means that pressing is not necessary.

During the British colonial period, seersucker was a popular material in Britain’s warm weather colonies like British India. When Seersucker was first introduced in the United States, it was used for a broad array of clothing items. For suits, the material was considered a mainstay of the summer wardrobe of gentlemen, especially in the South, who favored the light fabric in the high heat and humidity of the summer, especially prior to the arrival of air conditioning.

The fabric was originally worn by the poor in the U.S. until preppy undergraduate students began wearing it in the 1920s in an air of reverse snobbery.)

Too much information?? I know Style Sisters I just thought it was interesting. Getting back to Eugene.  Doesn’t he look debonair! — Adding to the look- he sips on a glass of single malt scotch Macallan 12- which he makes sure places he frequents has in stock.

Image

Oh just to wrap up this style brother for you Style Stars- he rotates among about 30 suits and he also owns a pair of seersucker shorts.  Tres chic

Who are your style icons?

Diana Ross in Gown from 20130626_165324Hey my Style Star Sisters. You can not help but be influenced just a little by celebrities who dress incredibly whether they’re on the red carpet or running errands in the latest Louboutins and perfectly holey jeans. Quite annoying! Keep in mind that even the most effortless looks are in many cases styled by a well paid stylist.

Thank goodness I have been blessed to have had the best style influence during my young and adult life. My mother Brenda. She was a sophisticated, slingback shoe wearing lady who always shopped on a budget never caring if the name was Evan Picone or if the label was cut out. Who cares. How does it fit and how does it make you feel and move were much more important. Confidence was mom’s best accessory.

I must say our mother’s style had the greatest influence on even how I shop and my own personal style today. I prefer dresses and skirts over jeans any day. And, slingback shoes are still my favorite. I could wear a flea market find and wear it like it was from the racks of Bergdorf Goodman.

If you twisted my arm and made me pick a celebrity who I felt had style reminiscent of my mom’s,  it would have to be Diana Ross in Mahogany and Lady Sings the Blues. Wow, she was impeccable. Beautiful, confident, and effortless. So, I ask you my style sisters, who are your style icons? Let us know.

Are we tired of colorblocking yet? Not

photo (3)photo (1)Okay style stars. I admit I sometimes get caught up in a trend. And, that’s no different from all the colorblocking trends we see in every store from high end retails to the fun girl synthetic fabric selling mall magnets. Ugh. But, hey, when it’s done right, it’s soo right. What I try to always do is take a trend and mix it up. I just recently bought a pair of gorgeous multi blue suede colorblocked heels. I know a mouthful. Well, I was at first skeptical because this was an online purchase. But, when they arrived I was even happier with the vibrant colors and extra cushion for the balls of my feet. Yah! I had to share this with you. The shoes are apart of the Spring/Summer Zara collection. And, at $89.99 they’re more than what I wanted to spend, but so worth it. And, they can be worn during many seasons including fall with black tights.

I recently wore these shoes to an event at Walt Clyde Frazier’s restaurant in New York and paired them with a lovely blue dress I bought at one of my inexpensive stores for $24.99. That’s right ladies. Check me out. What do you think? I received compliments all night and a few interesting looks.

I’ve just went shopping.. in my closet

Oh Style Sisters what to wear?. I’m sure you’ve noticed dresses are the rage. And I have invested in a few. So let me grab one and get to work.. but wait what have we here. In the back of my closet I see a royal blue suede shift dress peeking out at me. Now here is a little background- I’ve had this dress for years. And no I do not subscribe to the two year rule (if you haven’t worn it in two years toss it or donate it ). In fact I haven’t worn this dress in many years. It was always too big, but it was suede and I didn’t want to part with it. So in the back of my closet it stayed until one day last week. I grabbed it. It was perfect to wear to work.

Oh I anchor the news so I don’t know if you saw it and maybe said to yourself – nice dress. Well I got it by shopping… in my closet. I’m rocking it here at the anchor desk. Vanessa

Elite Lashes..Natural look

Elite Lashes..Natural look

Hello Style Stars,

I have a confession. I know I’m not alone because I see many other women wearing long, fluttery, thick, thin, cow-like, giraffe like lashes spattered across their eyelids. Traces of glue oozing from the corners. Nooooo.. Make it Stop! But I have a solution. After trying expensive so-called lash specialist, Ugh, and, buying different brands in many neighborhood drug stores or beauty supply outlets, I have found what I feel are the best and natural looking lashes.

Elite Lashes #18 are great for a long, thin flirty look. This can be worned in the daytime or special occasions for the more conservative. I also love Glam i #747S. These are a bit thicker than the Elite lashes, yet they give that come hither look without looking overdone. Love love! You can pick the Elite lashes up in any Duane Reade nationwide. The Glam i lashes are found in beauty supply stores. And, the cost is $2.69 to $2.99. Yes, another affordable find.

Now, to apply the lashes, you will need Duo Glue in dark and a long bobby pin. The bobby pin will give you a thin application so you will not have excess glue leaking from your eyes. Not cute! You must remove the round tip of the bobby pin also. Once you apply the glue to the lash strip, gently press as close to your eyelids as possible. Hold for a few seconds. Warning: do not attempt this 10 minutes before leaving for work or while waiting for a car pick up for the airport. You should practice a couple of times. Now, walk out with confidence.

Bucco Capensis ankle booties ...

Bucco Capensis ankle booties …

Hello my Style Stars…I love fashion just like alot of women out there, but I refuse to go broke trying to follow some of the trends that are here today and gone tommorow. I fell in love with the floral ankle booties this season, but I didn’t love the various high prices. So, what’s a Style Star to do! Start searching for affordable and fashionable looks without ridiculous high prices.

My first find were the Jimmy Choo Bolt Painted Python Peep-Toe Bootie…On the Saks website, this retails for $1,895…Um, mortgage or ankle bootie. I know better Style Stars! Keep looking!…

Well, my favorite designer discount store had a blow out sale. Daffys was my favorite store to find great affordable unique items without the high cost. Weeks before I noticed the most stylish delicate floral printed booties in cream with a spiral high heel. The boots were Nina Ricci and I had no idea how much they retailed for until I went searching. The boots were $1250. At Daffys, they were a little over $300. Nah, still too high. I waited until the very last 2 weeks before Daffys closed. I know risky, but I just hoped no one else loved the boots as much as I did. Sure enough, the fashion gods were on my side. There was only one pair in the entire store and I was able to snag them for a little under $100. Yes! I had a great pair of designer boots, and I saved a bundle.

I was not done with my floral bootie search. Two pairs are better than one. And, these floral high heel ankle booties by Bucco Capensis were less than $30 ! Yes, that’s right!. I’m done now. On to the next fashion find.

Ok I really wanted it.. I saw those shorty cutey flair flirty leather skirts in a magazine and I had to have one. So I searched and found it!
Real Leather skirt $545 Nordstrom
It’s a little pricey at Nordstroms. Well let’s be honest it is very pricey at $545. So I searched some more and viola!
Real Leather skirt $428 Guess by Marciano
This one is less $428 by Guess. Still too much. You know I don’t have to have a “real” leather one. I could rock a “faux” flirty fun skirt.
faux lether skirt $59
Bingo! This one is $59. But still I’m not satisfied. I’m watching every dime. And I just know my cheap stores would come up with the economy version.. and guess what?
BAM! HERE IT IS: My flirty faux leather skirt
OH and did you check the price!!!My faux leather skirt $16.99 price tag cu
Yes that is $16.99 17 bucks! Same look, same design. I got it at Joyce Leslie. The super cheap -super trendy store- catering to the super young clientel.
Now what would ‘a woman of certain age’ do with a $17 skirt?- Why pair it up with a Christian Dior jacket and wear it to a luncheon at The legendary Plaza hotel. And NO one was the wiser. Vanessa Ciao
